About Sengkang New Town in Singapore

  Sengkang means prosperous harbour in Chinese. This area used to be a fishing port along the Sungei Serangoon. Fishing villages, rubber, pepper and pineapple planations flourished in this area in the olden days.   Before the town was developed, it was home to farms and tropical forests. There was a few low rise residential in Punggol Rural Centre accomodating those resettled farmers located along Punggol Road. Those blocks was enbloc to make way for high rise residential.   In 1994, HDB started to conceptualise a new town in Sengkang.
